Hi Colin,
My experiance says that even if you include Grayscale chart with absolute white to absolute black in steps and 50 % Gray in it., with close up photo for skin colour reference.
In any case you have to rely more on your judgement
Only for critical COMMERCIAL purpose you have to go as per your suggested method of every thing should be profiled

Hi Ashwin,
A grayscale is useful for checking exposure, but not needed for white balancing.

Sorry, but I disagree. Profiling is essential is you want to take the guesswork + trial & error out of colour management; and whereas I'd like to think that any professional would consider it a prerequisite for commercial work, it's still very applicable to non-commercial projects if the photographer wants to make life a lot easier.

Hi Colin,
Before responding to your opinion I would humbly request you to let me have your finding on My corrected version - and your corrected version and tell me what difference you have noticed.
Please note that this is not to say whose theory, yours or mine is right. But after your findings, I will share with you and all of you here in forum what I had found with my discussion which I had with FUJI people at PHOTOKINA ( GERMANY) which I specially visited for this purpose only in the Year 1982., when I was having my own Colour Lab for my Own work., and the problem which I was facing.
Hope you will not mind and favour me with your valued onion.
My knowledge is limited, whereas some of you, you are included have vast knowledge and experiance in every field of photography related matters. I respect you all for the work you are doing to the photography community by giving them proper advice and guidance.

Thank you Nik for posting this very nice portrait of this young lady.
Her position, the angle of rotation and the crop you have choose is indeed very pleasant.
:)
