The shadows are filled and it is a very nice picture indeed.

The photo I post here was staged. They were waiting for me to shoot. With flash. I have no time now but I will tell you something about this pictures later.
    Thanks, Antonio!

About your picture, I love the position of the people in the group and the appropriate depth of filed, and of course, the great skin tones as always. If only you could get rid of the guy in the background A tighter crop may be without him and the small brick wall on the bottom right...

    Hi Alis,

You've got a good WB on your son's face for the TV light but I wonder if the blacks could also do with a tweak to make them neutral, we all know his hair isn't really that colour!

May not be possible, just a throw away thought

Good focus on near eye with the limited DoF

As you learn (from Antonio), so do we all

    Regards,

But Alis, the guy at the far right is intentional.
I told him to be there and stay looking at me !
Th brick wall yes I could remove it ...

The threads are popular but have few participants.
I would like to see more people involved.
    Have a nice Sunday.

    Hi Dave,

Thanks. I went back to the file and tried for a few minutes but was not successful in changing the hair color (make it darker I think you meant) without messing up the skin tone. And I mean if I dont use masks and do it selectively. Not sure why or if I am doing it right.

    Hi Alis,

Yeah, I have a feeling masking might be required because the skin tone looks spot on, so you certainly don't want to compromise that. Need a black balance control!

I was meaning the sort of dark red cast in hair due to the light in the rest of the room.

I don't know how to either

and maybe the result would look 'wrong' anyway.

    Cheers,

    Hi Ali,

The sharpening didn't look too bad to me - but if you think you have overdone it a bit on an image, just add a gaussean blur (with whatever radius you need to counter the over-sharpening) ... it works a treat.

With regards to hair colour / TV light etc, don't be afraid to do some burning with a medium soft brush - it can make a big difference. Also be aware that with shots like that you can also get a colour cast from the clothing that the subject is wearing (can make getting skintones right an absolute nightmare, although I thought that your photo looked just fine).

I hope your saving all these portraits of your family somewhere safe - they'll be a an absolute family treasure in years to come.

Thanks, Colin. As always, very helpful. I am now getting into the habit of changing things in Photoshop in a more subtle way, thanks to the advice I have gotten here. I used to move those sliders a lot on the background. Now I actually enjoy using layers and masks. I feel like I am painting. We should nominate Thomas Knoll for a Nobel Prize!

Regarding the files, now I think I have a very sophisticated and safe workflow. I download them into a LaCie RAID drive. I have DVDs from almost all of them. And I keep the drives that are full now (I can't throw away any of the pictures, even the bad ones, Obsessive compulsive disorder? so I have already filled two 500GB drives!) in two separate places. One in my office, and one at home for everyday use. I have to make sure I guess I transfer them every few years into a new drive.

It is a full time job my friend, and I am not even getting paid for it!

Abusing my UWA lens: he was trying to touch the camera and that is why I lost a portion of his foot! Moving target:

    Seems a little harsh, Alis.
Poor chap will be hopping around for ages now

Perhaps all posts here should be bound by that statement 'no children were harmed during the taking of this photograph'

As to the photo; not sure about the cropping; maybe 5% off left hand side?
Possibly also need to clone out the orange 'flags'?

    Good shot though.

    Regards,

Thanks, Dave. No one was hurt. And you are right, I should have cleaned it up. There was construction going on next to where I took the picture and all the flags are put there by them on the lawn

Nice again Alis with a very good work.
Now look at this rather disastrous result of mines:
    EXIF
ISO too high, but there was no light... What could I do ?
And I don't know how to remove the noise...
Have to learn some day ...
Shot with the 70-200 IS yes

If I show you the original you would be horrified

I think this is very good actually. The shadows and colors suits the subject very well.

    Very artistic!

About the noise, I have to learn how to use the Noise Ninja too. Or the Neat Image. I have both of them but everytime I open them I get lost and never had the time to learn it systematically. One day I will do. Right now, I just need to work on the skin tone!
