Results - January 2011 Monthly Competition

Hi Folks,

I've counted the votes ... another very close competition!

In first place - on 30 points - we have Nick Johnson's Benches & Bamburgh Castle:



In second place - just one vote behind on 27 points - we have Bagus with Hiroshima Castle:



And in third place - on 18 points - we have Adam's Mill Stone:



Congratulations to everyone. Also, I have to say that it was neck and neck the whole way between images 1 & 2, and could easily have gone either way.

Well done everybody, but particularly Nick. I sat on that bench last Autumn when our wine club went on an away-weekend to celebrate our 10th birthday. 20 of us stayed in Bamburgh for 3 days.

Anyway, the winning image has been added to the Monthly Competition winners album.

The lighting on all three of theses shots is beautiful and, I think what made them win. Congratulations to you three winners!

Congratulations to Nick and Adam. I am surprised to know that one of the pictures that made it so difficult to announce the January Competition winner was mine. I am so happy many of you like my shot. This encourage me to learn more about photography. Congratulations to all who participated the January Competition. You all made excellent pictures. Thank you Nasseem . You made an excellent picture too. I tried to take some shots of fireworks in Hiroshima last year. But I failed. I like yours. It was quite difficult to choose one of my favorite. I voted for Setchell's Frankfurt blue hours. Congratulations to you too.

Dear Gals & Guys,

I'm in my third day of nursing “man flu” - actually a perfectly normal cold – so your warm comments and congratulations are particularly welcome. Congratulations to Bagus on being so close – just love the contrast between old and new in your image. Also congratulations to Adam – I should be very happy if that Mill Stone image where mine – what wonderful light! A Big thanks to all the other competitors and also to Colin for his determination to get a result out of us!

I've just carefully checked the exif data for that frame – 5D 24-105, 32mm @1/200 f11, ISO 400. What that means is that just about any modern camera could take that photo. Not just DSLR – but a bridge, compact, or a point-and-shoot. So to anyone who is wishing they could have taken that frame I say “You can” - the only thing that is special about it is being there, and being there has nothing to do with the camera or lens.

I would certainly never want anyone to think I was slighting their photographic abilities, but when I saw Nick's shot posted, I almost felt like everyone else would be vying for second place unless the skies opened and earth moved to produce shot a perfect setting, yet one more time in a month.
It's one of those shots you wonder how ever did the time and the camera come into such perfect communion. It is simply a marvelous photograph and though, like said by others, even while it stood out so prominently, it sat in quite aspiring company. The compilation of imagery shown on this site everyday is astonishing. I have searched forums for years and never found one so, good, pure in intent, and run so astonishingly well.
