Re: Used 40D VS new D3100

I've always felt that one needed to first nail down which system one preferred (Canon vs. Nikon in this case), and then make a decision regarding which camera within that system one can afford to get. It's much easier to decide between a used D300s and a new D7000, than it is to decide between a new Nikon entry level and used Canon prosumer. There are too many non technical issues that need to be sorted out before you can make an intelligent comparison - IMHO.

after last posting, i bought the 40D and have been very happy with my purchase thus far. you can find a handful of photos i've taken with it under my profile, and as a newbie with pretty much no technical training i would love feedback on them! half the pics i try to upload fail (especially wide landscapes) but whatever.

Congratulations on the 40D. Excellent choice. I have one myself and am yet to be disappointed all the failures are down to user error rather than camera limitations. I intend to run mine until it fails (touch wood) by then the 5D Mk II will have plummeted out of the stratosphere of retired Welshmen and be affordable to this lesser mortal
