Re: My First Attempt at Family Portraiture

Reminds me of the time I had "mum and dad" here in the studio with me whilst I shot their two kids. Mum wanted small black and white prints on paper, dad wanted large colour canvases (so about as far apart as one can get).

At one stage she literally had her hands around his throat ...

I had to laugh on this one!!

I saw the pic and started to scroll down to find the "real" pic but that was all I got so... Then it hit me that that was what you were trying for.

I had two $8 incandescent shop lights on either side behind the 'subjects' - intending to be a hair light. The main light was on the room in front in the middle. I had one CTO gelled flash on either side slightly above the faces shot through an umbrella and a diffuser.
The flash to the left was .... way too far left! I only have the one flash stand, so I put the flash where I could without stacking too much furniture
I find shooting a single person much easier with the cheap equipment I have There were a lot more shadows to think about with 4 people sitting next to each other.
If you haven't read Colin's lessons on portraiture (stickied in this forum), I recommend you do that. There's some good stuff in there.
    Good luck with your portraiture!

Cracking shot Brian. I find it impossible to get all the kids in one place and all in reasonable moods. The expression on your wife's face says it all. As someone said above this will be the shot that is remembered in years to come.

You might enjoy this picture from a session with 3 kids that had clearly had enough of me.
(I wasn't sure how to attach a photograph so it just comes up).
