Played in the dance studio this afternoon

Our school offers modern, jazz and ballet classes. One student who is also in my morning film class volunteered to do some workouts with me roaming about...I did, on a few occasions ask her to move into the light, or turn her head..or whatever, but mostly just intruded in her space willy-nilly. These are the first three:

The light, the pose and the composition (I see Peter's triangles ) really everything about # 3 is just stunning!

Thank you, Kay...while I have your attention, I wonder if this shot is too soft..I was going for soft but now wonder if I overdid it...soft is not generally one of my strong suits.

Not a bad one in 'em (of course)

Although I do wonder what #3 would have looked like if you had focussed on her hair?

EDIT - no the last isn't too soft (for me anyway)

Hey, it's a pink one for Mary

They are all gorgeous. The last one is nice, not too soft. Is there natural light in the dance studio?

I like these. They look timeless. #1 is my favourite, I think. Well captured.

I LOVE THEM ALL. However #2 is my favorite. It looks like something out of the early 20th Century in Paris...

There is one tall window in the studio which gives me the natural light needed for shots like these. I suppose I could use a soft box as well, but I don't have one at school and don't like lugging it around all that much. Thanks for your comments...and that's everyone.

This is the last of that series until my eyes adjust...getting a little bleary-eyed.

I made a lot of shots and I think these four are representative of what I wanted to accomplish. To me, to see kids put in the time it takes to become a class dancer, and juggle books, clubs and other things...it gives good faith to the weducational process as a whole. I have some other motion shots I'm going to play with over the weekend.
I appreciate your comments and I think I too have to go with #3 though I'm rather drawn to the concentration on the girl's face in the last one.

Sorry Chris - I got waylaid - but I agree with the others - it isn't soft it has that ethereal quality about it that suits the subject matter perfectly.

Very nice...and all with just the available natural light. Soo what are the elements that go into creating this 'soft' effect? Is it exposure? No sharpening/minimal sharpening? Blurring? A special post-processing technique? Just curious.

Re: Played in the dance studio this afternoon

    Thanks, Debbie.
Light, aperture/shutter combinations...some shot with a tripod, some handheld...I get the subject as close to the light as I can and still get a clean, sharp focus...

For the posed shots, I shoot aperture priority and with motion (which I will post later), I use a shutter priority and always a tripod. I am reshooting many of these next week and use the information I learned from shooting these...this is stilll a work in progress...I think Martyn has shot a trillion of these, given the precision by which he shoots these dancers....and I hope at some time, i too will reach that point.
