I don't think that we have Blue Heron in South Africa but here are some photos of the black heron. I just love the first one's pose. Just after this he caught a salamander and I got an awesome chance to catch it with the salamander in the air between his open beak but its slightly out of focus!!! I must have got too excited.

I have spikes and a saddle, but i use a climbing stand for the most part. I use the spikes and saddle to clear the brush.

This young grey heron had a hard time in his first winter. The photo is made nearly straight into the sun light. In the winter no problem to do that.

Very nice shots diane. Amaizing, these types of birds are all over the world. It's a shame you didn't have more of the elephants in the frame. Would have made a very unique shot. I took a similar shot last year, with a heron and a whitetail deer standing side by side.

Nice lighting in this one, jan. Good and sharp with lots of detail as well. I think i would clone the small dark patch under the beak.

Steve, I have no cloning stamp in my software. I use only Nikon Capture NX2. I can only play with light and remove small dust spots. The dark spot (Duck on the ice) is to large to handle for my software. Not cloning is a restriction I have make for myself. I like to do the same I could do in the darkroom only now nicer, quicker and in colour. (and no bad smells)
You are right about the dark spot. I nearly buy software to correct this.
    Cheers, Jan

A pic from a few weeks ago:

    Great Blue Heron thread

One of my favorite subjects. The GBH's around here are so used to people (and cars) on the wildlife trails, they tend to stay still for you, and can be captured with a 200-300mm lens. Lots of good shots in this thread!

I wish they would sit still for me. The slightest movement and they fly. I have to use full camo to get close. Nice shot rob, thanks for posting.
