A few flying shots this time. I found a new tree to shoot from. Much closer, and i should get some awesome shots of the young one's from there. Now i'm almost 40 feet up to the base of the stand. Just finished trimming out the brush today.

Nice shot james. Don't be afraid to use the iso. You'll get sharper images with more shutter speed and higher iso than the other way around. There is also a slight color cast to this image. The green and blue channels are a little underexposed. If you bring up the levels tool and click on the individual channels(R/G/B) You will see what i'm talking about. Move the green and blue sliders untill they touch the hystogram and the blend mode to normal and it will correct it. Then go back to RGB and adjust the levels to your liking.

OOh, I love the second one in this series, Steve -- just beautiful. Tell me, are you actually sitting in a tree to take these, is that what you're saying? And what lens are you using? Just nosy.

Elise, i'm sitting 40 feet up a tree and using a canon 300f/4L + 1.4TC. The flying shots are iso 800 - 1250 depending on my shutter speed. Sometimes i can swing 640. For the still shots i usually drop down to 320.

Oh, and your not being nosy. If you would like to know something , ask away. Everyone benefits.

Wow -- I need to stick to those wading in the water of the Slough -- I could just as soon fly as get 40' up in a tree . I greatly admire what you're doing.

Love all the pics of the herons. Chris, I was vacationing in your area recently (Panama City Beach). Took a trip to Wakullah Springs State Park and got some good shots (1 posted here). Your right about the primes, I find them to be sharper. My image didn't get posted. I'll try again

I was about 50 feet away from this guy and he kept a very wary eye on me even though he looks to be rather nonchalant in stance.

If you were on PC Beach, you were less than 10 miles from me...on the beach, there is a state park and all these herons shots were done out there. There's a heron rookery there but it's on an osland about a 100 yeards out so I would need a big lens. Further down the road is an egret rookery and it is much easier to access, but would still need at least a decent 150-300 lens to do justice to the shots.

Chris: Went to St. Andrew's State Park and went to the egret rookery but there were a lot of branches in the way. Went to dinner one night to Captain Anderson's. Took my camera and found a snowy egret sitting on a post and got some good shots. At the other end of the bridge near that big ship there's another marina where I got some good shots of brown pelicans. It's a great area for bird photography. Hope to go back next year.

Well, then there will be full circle as I am going to a workshop in New Hampshire this summer and do some travel up through Maine, but going back by way of Niagra Falls and down through London, etc to Detroit and back home from there...though might get waylayed and go off on another westerly tangent...Plan on taking a bunch of cards, laptop and portable HD. Gonna have some fun. Hope you enjoyed your stay here.
