A bit too much black for my taste Peter, especially on the last one. I would have cropped that closer to the coloured part. Having said all that, my first impression was all about the colour itself and that looks great. My first thought was that it is almost like abstract painting.

There is a lot of talent here and a fantastic display of images.
For close ups I using my Nikon 70-300VR with or without the Nikon 6T diopter.
Here are 2 images of a section of the australian native greville sp. from my garden.

The first image is just part of the flower

Beautiful Wendy. I like the second one best, it is very peaceful, almost dreamy with the brightly coloured flower and the darker background. In the first photo the flower looks great, but I find the bokeh a bit distracting, it is restless on my eyes.

    Re: Macro flower photographs

Thanks for posting how you took the photo. I wish everyone would do that. I am still trying to learn all the different combinations of apertures and shutter speeds and ISOs. I was just sitting here thinking about how you all are getting the background to blur...what combinations did you use. And then to take water and try to slow it down to experiment and learn...how does that work. So much to learn!

I love all these. So many beautiful colors and shapes. Amazing! Thank you to those who post the camera stats for the photos. A newbie like me is still trying to figure out how all the apertures, shutter speeds, and ISOs work in various situations. I am truly impressed with the beauty of the photos in this thread!

You did this f4 at 1/160. I am trying to learn this so if the shutter speed was higher would the background be more blurry?

Liz - shutter speed is (sort of) unrelated to background blur. The two things that affect blur is the aperture and the focal length. Have a look at the tutorials for more information. The larger the aperture (smaller the f number), the more blur. So f/4 will blur more than f/20.

Shutter speed doesn't come into it except for saying that you can't consider aperture alone, it needs to be considered with ISO and shutter speed.

Have a flick through the tutorials and then more importantly try it out!

I've been reading, but nothing teaches you better than trial and error, and I am going to go play with this to see what happens. Thanks

Both beauties Ric. I like the purple and detail in the top one best. The second photo has a nice vagueness to it.

Both of these are just delicious. I prefer #2 but they are both wonderful. I do hope everyone is clicking on these to view in the lytebox.

Liz: I'd just like to add that distance from subject to background makes quite a difference also. Regardless of f stop, the farther away the subject is from the background the more blur. A good example of this is in the 2 shots that Ric posted in post 495. Also choose your backgrounds carefully and as you are studying you will start to notice what will work and what does not.

I used to post my camera settings all the time, but have become lazy in that regard. I will start taking the time. There are EXIF viewers that you can get that will show you the EXIF data, in most but not all cases. The one I use is. KUSO. It is a free download, just google KUSO and you will see lots of download sites. It's easy to use and right clicking most images will show you all the camera settings. There are other viewers too, I just mentioned KUSO because I use it. Google EXIF viewer and you will see lots of options, I can't say if one is better or worse than another.

I don't really understand how it is blurry both in front of the flower and behind it. That is very cool!
