Facebook image settings

hi guys,

does anyone know the optimum export settings to use with Facebook? Once uploaded my images loose sharpness

Using Lightroom my settings are;

Format: jpeg
Quality: 100
Resize to fit: Long edge 680px, Dont enlarge ticked and resolution 72dpi
Sharpen for screen: High

What settings do you use? I've tried lots of Different settings and I'm sure facebook processes the images using aggressive settings because each time my images loose considerable sharpness...

Facebook resizes the image to 604pixels wide in my albums. One presumes that degradation occurs if you post a much larger image than this at a higher than screen resolution, and which is subsequently reprocessed. I notice that the image file sizes are in the order of 50Kb.

I use 720px on the long side and output sharpen. Facebook then doesn't need to resample as long as you use 720 or less pixels on the long side, but it re-compresses anyway and there is nothing you can do to avoid that.

The old size used to be 604px but that was at least a year ago, and almost all accounts have been updated.

So basically Facebook compresses on upload regardless of file size.... I also notice a choice of standard or high quality on upload but that doesnt seem to make a difference either...

I was thinking the HQ images upened up in a larger file size when you clicked on them.
It used to work that way. This might have changed recently.

I'm pretty sure HQ images look the same as the other ones, except they just have a "high resolution download" button for obtaining the (still downsized and compressed) original. However, when you upload a 720px image it doesn't provide that button even if you use HQ.

I must also emphasize that if the images aren't already in sRGB, they need to be converted. Depending on your browser version, images in a color space other than sRGB can look very different than what you see in your PP software.

I think that if you resize to 720 for the long side & make sure that it's in sRGB, FB doesn't reprocess. The reason I say this is because even if I upload quite a few, they appear more or less instantly, and as I'd see them in say, Gmail.

Hi Matthew, I add my photos at their full size of roughly 3600 on the long side, I don't really want to take the time to re-size everything for the web) but use the standard feature rather than the high res - either way it compresses and you lose some sharpness but if you choose the high res mode, then those who are allowed to view your photos can elect to download the photo in high resolution - which is exactly why i do not use that option lol
