Camera Purchase Decision Time
I have narrowed my choices to these two options within my price range:
Canon EOS 7D with a EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM
or a
Nikon D7000 with a AF VR Zoom-NIKKOR
80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D ED
They both seem to be great cameras able to do what I want (wildlife, landscape, surfing) without going into the professional (and pricier) models. I will be buying additional lenses as time goes on. Can those of you who know these cameras share some insights with me? I have read much of the analysis on DP web sites and am still conflicted. This will probably be the last camera upgrade for me, so which would be the best for the rest of my life?

I would suggest that you consider what alternative lens you may need in the future, or already have. Then see which brand produces the best options for that eventuality.
