Thanks for the tip, I will keep that in mind.

No need to ask permission Yisehaq, thank you for posting.

What type of event were these taken at?

My favourite image of yours is number 3. The car is not what I would normally expect to see so it makes me smile It almost looks like it was placed there as a joke but I am sure it wasn't and I wouldn't want to offend anyone It is just a shame about the tape running across the image

    All the best

    Nice one Mick.
I love the colour, and matching helmet too

What lens did you take these with?

    Thanks Steve,
This is what is called around here a city ciruit race. What is wrong with you? I was showing of the best ones from the race here. Of course, there are many which look like the number 3 in the race.
For me the event, is more of a chance to practice my photo skills than enjoying motorsport. Carrying my zoom lens they allow me to go anywhere in the ciruit.

BTW, I like your panning shots. May I ask, if you use flash for your panning or any other motorsport events? If so, for example at mid day on a very sunny day, what kind of flash setting you use? My question comes from my experience. I usually use ETTL without any compensation and I didn't get any satisfactory result as yet. I can get very close to these cars like 10 meters or even less. I also use 300 mm lens on my 50D or 350D.

Thanks for your comments on my shots.
As a rule I wouldn't think of using flash for panning shots because outside, in bright conditions and from quite a distance away it wouldn't have much effect apart from annoy the driver maybe

I would use the flash if i was trying to freeze some action like the moto x pictures that Martyn posted but even then I tend not to use ETTL as it restricts the creativity and tends to give a very predictable result. I try and go fully manual when using flash in any situation as I like the challenge and the complete flexibility as well as the sometimes unpredictable results

Maybe if you are close enough to the action then a flash could work for you but I think there would be too much of a contradiction between the flash freezing action and the panning creating motion blur. I will be good fun trying though so why not give it a go. My suggestion would be to put your flash onto manual though and use trial and error to find the best power.

One problem that you might encounter would be the recharge rate of your flash though. When I am taking panning shots i would normally fire off a burst of 5 or 6 frames and so the highest setting my 550EX speedlite could be at to give 6 flashes continuously would be 1/8th and that probably wouldn't be strong enough unless light is starting to fade.

    All the best

Thanks for the comments Steve, I use a Canon 100-400mm L IS USM f4 lens, With this shot at Hall Bends it was set at 100mm as you stand so near to the track, none of the shots from this corner are cropped, I took some Bike shots last wekend for different parts of the track which I will post as soon as I get them pp`d, hears one of Roy hanks and Dave Wells on their F2 sidecar outfit, again taken at Hall Bends

Ideal lens for most tracks I would imagine. I have it on my wish list but not until I have the 24-105 f4L IS first. In the meantime I use my 70-200 f4L IS and have been very pleased with it, even if it does lack a bit of reach at times

Nice shot of the sidecar, I hope you don't mind but I had a quick play with it, what do you think?

Let me try and remember......Changed the crop (obviously). then played with the levels and lowered the saturation of the reds as the orange on the bike looked a bit bright to me.

Then I converted it to Lab colour on about 40% opacity just to make the rest of the colours pop a bit more.

Added a very subtle vignette just to focus more on the subject and darken the surround slightly.

I think that was about it. All in CS5.

It's easy to see that my absence from this thread up to now is a sign that this is not photography that I do. But that doesn't mean that I can't be impressed by what is appearing. Just came in for a look this morning.

Amongst many superb images, I think this is an outstanding image. The angle that it is presented at really adds to dynamism, but what really stands out (apart from the wonderfully photographed vehicle) are the bands (blocks) of colour - grass; roadway; grass; barrier wall; etc. I count 7 such bands. Just brilliant.

    World's fastest Hillman

Spent the day trying to figure out how to pan. This Hillman has a mid mounted WRX Imprezza engine - goes like the clappers.

    Thanks Mick

Shot 2 is great, perfect the way the shadow falls and you can see the gap between the rear tyre and the track.

    Nice one.
