Spent the day trying to figure out how to pan. This Hillman has a mid mounted WRX Imprezza engine - goes like the clappers.

At the last race I went to there was a Suzuki swift (old boxy shape) 1.3 that revved to 18,000 rpm and absolutuely blitzed all the scooby's and evo's on the track. the thing sounded like and angry wasp stuck in a matchbox. Unlike the Hillman above though it had no stickers or spoilers apart from the number. The guy driving it was about 70 too so the photos are useless, it just looks like an old boy on his way to the shops

Shot 2 is great, perfect the way the shadow falls and you can see the gap between the rear tyre and the track.

A common problem and is why I keep telling the wife that I absolutely must have a 7D. At 8fps I reckon that will double my chances of a keeper.

No - these hoons must have put something in the back - they had green, yellow and blue smoke at different times.

I would use the flash if i was trying to freeze some action like the moto x pictures that Martyn posted but even then I tend not to use ETTL as it restricts the creativity and tends to give a very predictable result. I try and go fully manual when using flash in any situation as I like the challenge and the complete flexibility as well as the sometimes unpredictable results

Maybe if you are close enough to the action then a flash could work for you but I think there would be too much of a contradiction between the flash freezing action and the panning creating motion blur. I will be good fun trying though so why not give it a go. My suggestion would be to put your flash onto manual though and use trial and error to find the best power.

One problem that you might encounter would be the recharge rate of your flash though. When I am taking panning shots i would normally fire off a burst of 5 or 6 frames and so the highest setting my 550EX speedlite could be at to give 6 flashes continuously would be 1/8th and that probably wouldn't be strong enough unless light is starting to fade.

Thanks Steve for the explanation. When I saw your shot to be bright, colorful and less contrasty, I thought that must be the flash that is doing it. So, now I guess not. I really like that.
Your shot from the direction of light seem to be taken around noon. Usually for me, that period of time will cause my photos to be very contrasty. Is the trick on PP? if so, any tips.

Ok so this isn't motorsport but I figured this is as good a place as any to post it.

I travelled thousands of miles and the last thing I expected to see in Florida Keys was an Austin Healey.



But even more unexpected was to see an Austin Healey in thi state....



The poor owner was still with the vehicle, it had happened just a couple of hours beforehand. He said he had just spent a fortune on it and took it out for a drive and pulled over when he smelled fuel, he popped the bonnet and it was all ok so he wiggled the fuel pipe and it came off in his hand, fuel everywhere and boom, the whole thing went up in flames.

As I said here are some shots from past weekend. It was a great weekend with loads of track time and shredded tires. I didn't had that much time to shoot and the majority of shots I did where shots to analyse the tire deflection and car roll. Quite interesting, but not from a photographic point of view.

The panning shots came out fine too. It is just a shame about the cones in the foreground but I like them all the same because it adds to the story of the testing.

No problem, sorry for the delay responding but I am away from home at the moment so have to grab a few minutes on line when I can.

The shots were taken in the middle of the day on a very bright and sunny day. i would be lying if I said I hadn't done anything in PP but not too much to be honest. My shots seem to have got much better since I got a 70-200 f4 L series lens. The optics are a big factor of course but I think more importantly the autofocus motor must be quicker that the 75-300 that I used previously as so many more of the shots are pin sharp.

For me pre-focussing does the job. Pre focussing on a certain part of the track not only helps you focussing, but you can compose the shot before shooting.

thanks for your comments, i tend to get good treatment at local venues like donington, cheers martyn
