You've identified the biggest issue yourself. Good stuff capturing birds in the act of feeding like this. But the 'too much white' is the problem, because you have nailed the focus and exposure on the birds very well.

My goodness! Look at those feathers! Beautiful birds! I don't know what to say about the white but, Donald's right - you nailed the focus and exposure on the birds.

This was with the Canon 70-200 IS lens. I was able to get reasonably close with my dinghy and slowly drifted past.
