A bit of a struggle to get a good exposure on this scene, but I liked the way that this hoverfly was holding out it's left wing. As though it was signaling it's intention to turn left.
In reality, I suspect that it had a balance problem and the outstretched wing was acting as a counter weight.
The hoverfly is Portevenia maculata which is a species that specialises on Wild Garlic plants, as here.
40D with Sigma 180 macro lens and speedlite flash; and obviously, a Manfrotto tripod.

Nice shot Geoff and I like the exposure you got. Hoverfly is well placed in the frame too.

With that lens, James, I usually work around 12 to 18 inches from the target. Which I find to be a 'sensible' working distance balance between getting close and scaring the insects.
But it is also cropped. That fly is about 10 mm long.
