Yeah, Im there too... Im also struggling with seeing all the amazing photos shown here and thinking... I need a L lens! Took a bunch of photos on a hike of small waterfalls on streams in the woods yesterday... none of them turned out well. I think part of my problem is Im trying hard to master the DSLR and learn to take good pictures with it... then I also learn I need to learn photoshop too to tweak a picture so it pops just right! Sigh... sometimes it feels like I cant win!
Hanging out on this site definitely has its "intimidation" factor. Not that anyone here does it on purpose, but I certainly feel way out-classed here. But it is pushing me to get better, and I think it is working already.
You also don't need an L lens, Mike... just patience and attention to detail in the field.

Thats what I love about this site. Photos here are so good, that it makes me want to get to that level. Other photo sites I check too have more people posting pics that are very similar to what Im taking and I don't feel challenged enough. When I started reading the tutorials, whew, they flew over my head! Now that I have been reading stuff here, when I go back to those tutorials, they actually make sense! Guess we who feel flustered, need to keep at it!
When you feel discouraged about taking 100 pictures and not seeing instant glory in them, go talk to a wedding photographer who comes back with 300 photos from which to create a 20 page album. Those photographers have learned what you are just now beginning to realize.
We used to go to the desert/canyons with about 10 rolls of film for each day we planned to shoot. Bill Belknap would shoot well over 250 shots to get 4 or 5 pictures for one of his National Geographics articles.
From what I've seen of your work here, you have nothing to be ashamed, nor, disappointed about. You are doing well and progressing nicely.

No no no no - yes, us lot down here are serial repeat offenders of tacking the tangent to nowhere path as well.......
Kay, don't encourage them please. Trust me, I work with a bunch of Poms, Scots and Irish who either hate or love each other at any given hour (largely determined by football (soccer for us) scores). They're an unstable lot the Poms (et al)............must be the cold, inbreeding, or some such
Terribly sorry Sir but the gunboats will not be ready until 2019 and then we will not have any aircraft to fly off them - well not our own at any rate. We are having a whip round for ammunition and already have donations of a catherine wheel and two roman candles so things are looking up."Carruthers - The colonists are becoming restless. Send in a gunboat. And tell William and Kate to get down there on a goodwill visit, to humour them."
You have made me want to read The Riddle of the Sands" againCarruthers
Nah it's what P C Wren refers to as 'cafard' brought on by hot climates, cheap liquor (Forsters) close confinement (Perth)They're an unstable lot the Poms (et al)............must be the cold, inbreeding, or some such
