well if I am really honest ....pause whilst she puts down her copy of the gaurdian and knocks her blackberry off the bench (oh sorry did i not say I have a mac? )

I have to admit the kilted one was mentioned - I did say it was getting harder to keep up with the photographically educational threads here due to the time I had to spend giving cheek to the MacK man

Oh, dear! I knew this moment of severe jealousy would come! I've been trying to prepare for it.

I found out, last night, that I get to meet one of my other big mentors. She's going to take the train in and we're going to meet. I am SUCH a lucky, lucky, lucky girl!!! This and this are her.

    Nope. But we already knew!

Are you seriously suggesting I need to expand my theory of Mac owners to encompass all Scots whose surname starts Mac?

Donald! Do you own a Mac?

No. I thought not. Sanity restored.

Hey! you can't weasel your way out like that. No BB indeed! You'll be telling us next that you don't actually have a Mac, and the Audi was all a cover-story for the fact that you drive a 1984 Lada that you picked up cheap (?) in Eastern Europe on your honeymoon.

    Re: Help me, Guys!

New York City like many big cities of the world has its dangerous areas. However, given some common sense, NYC is no more dangerous and probably a lot less dangerous than many of the world's cities.

That said, I am 6'1" tall and weigh somewhere around 220 pounds (about 185 cm and 100 kilograms) and I still take care in any place I go to make sure that I am not venturing into a situation which might be dangerous for me. I was a combat cameraman in Vietnam and put my life on the line to bring back pictures of combat. However, since I am no longer earning my living that way, there is no image worth putting myself in harms way to record.

There are web sites such as this ( http://www.neighborhoodscout.com/nei...s/crime-rates/ ) which reflect the crime rates for various cities in the USA. As per this web site, NYC is not listed as among the 100 most dangerous cities in the USA.

Again, it depends upon where you go with your camera and when you go there. My own area, San Diego, CA, is considered an overall very safe city. However, there are some areas into which I would not venture at all; and other areas in which I would be very careful about venturing (especially with an expensive camera around my neck) at night alone.

A bit of common sense has kept me safe over many years of photography.

Here is a web site providing the crime statistics by area in NYC.

    http://www.neighborhoodscout.com/ny/...FRJ1gwodh30b_A

I would have absolutely no qualms about venturing with a camera (or having my wife venture with a camera) into any of the general tourist areas of NYC in the day time and many in the evening. However, I was raised in a section of NYC which was extremely safe when I was a boy and a teenager but, is a section now into which I would not wander; with or without a camera, day or night. However, it is also not an area which the normal tourist would desire to visit.

However, I would not venture on the NYC subway system in the wee hours of the morning (THE TRAINS RUN 24 HOURS A DAY THERE). That is just not a great idea.

In answer to your equipment query. Your kit lens should be just fine for recording your visit to NYC. Shoot a lot of images and share them with us...

Have you looked into renting a lens?? I am sure there are a few places in NYC where you can rent and not risk your own glass....Have a great trip, look forward to seeing some great images.......

She will probably keep in touch on her Mac.

So your son has met Donald and Rob then. As long as you don't wear a sheepskin coat and Ugg boots you'll be fine.

Okay, hurry up, you all! We were going to leave on Wed. but, now, we're going tomorrow morning!
Katy don't forget to pack your .44 and a couple of quick loaders in your camera bag.........whoops to late - she's gone
....pause whilst she puts down her copy of the gaurdian and knocks her blackberry off the bench (oh sorry did i not say I have a mac? )
hey, I have got a couple of Macs in the house and several Blackberries and I'm common as muck.

When was the last time you saw a man in a Burberry baseball cap who wasn't toting an iPhone 4. You have to scrutinise the cleanliness of the vertical blinds to define the middle classes.. Oh and If you invite friends round for supper who are called Simon and Virginia you are almost certainly middle class....even if you own Rob's Lada, his Lidl PC and his Motorolla V3.

Sorry! Left it home on purpose. But, I did think about you guys, for sure!

    Rockefeller Center (the NBC building)

    Help me, Guys!

My mom catching up with her best friend from High School at dinner at Colicchio & Sons.

    Help me, Guys!

Shopping at Zabar's (of "You've Got Mail" fame and my checkout girl was just like the one in the movie but I didn't DARE ask if I could take her photo. Of course, it's famous in it's own right!)

    Help me, Guys!

Some nice Jewish boys on the steps of the Met museum of art.

(I was trying to be undercover and pretend that I was taking pics of my mom and sis but the middle one figured it out, I think - the way he was looking at me - and I realized that it looked like I was "coming on to him" - I do look Jewish, you know - oh, dear - you guys didn't warn me about that particular peril of street photography.... well, now, I know!)

    Help me, Guys!

The cat that lives in the posh "spoil the doggy" store on the upper west side.

    Help me, Guys!

I don't know why but, I've been to NYC ten times, now, and every time, the light in the Park is gorgeous!

    Help me, Guys!

In the end, I don't know if I have anything artsy fartsy and interesting or just have brilliant vacation pics. By the last day, I'd gotten much faster at just taking the darn photo and fiddling the dials for each different situation. If I saw it, I snapped it and let the "instincts" take over. It was such a rush - figuratively and literally.

Personally, went to the theatre twice (my mom and sis went three times - Daniel Radcliffe looked right into my sisters eyes!!! snort!), got happily and purposefully lost in Bloomingdales, got to meet another online friend (I pick really good ones, apparently), saw some inspiring art(!!!), walked miles and miles, hung out with lovely people, took one million photos but not enough and had a grand ol' time. OH! and did I mention the botanical gardens....

Sounds like a great time (who's Daniel Radcliffe?). Welcome home! Good on you all (you, sis, mum).

All good pics. I like the one in Zabar's. But ........

    Re: Help me, Guys!

Welcome back Katy hope you had a great time there. I loved it and I generally hate cities.

I have to agree with Donald the NBC building shot is a real cracker. I really like the next one along too. I think it has bags of atmosphere. The problem now is that you live in the wrong place. I can see you coming into your own in the city

Oh and the bakery shot may be worth a bash in b/w and plenty of contrast. I would try to cure the WB problem before conversion though.

Almost forgot. In the best of CiC tradition we gave your thread the looney makeover whilst you were away compete with class wars, ancient soviet motor vehicles and even an aussie eyeball....not heard from any of them since so we are assuming one of them was the devil dingo killer from Burrumbuttock NSW

So... Annie Liebovitz is back from the big smoke (or should that be apple?). Did you have a nice time? Are you still in two pieces? Rang Visa to cancel your stolen credit card? Bought a new camera to replace the one that disappeared? Realigned your chakras?

I like the tall, thin, Freudian building!
