I liked Rob's rather nice technique he developed and for what it is worth I had a bit of a play with it. However I used the magic quick selection tool to outline flower rather than the spherical select tool and for the feather used 250 ( #1) and then tried 25 (#2). Just thought I would post for interest. But maybe I am not on the right wavelength here and have missed what Rob is trying to achieve? Not hard for me to lose my way, you know. Do it all the time

It's almost there. You need a bit more separation between the main focus of interest of the shot (in the centre) and the rest of the shot. After all, the purpose of this is to make the central part of the shot really stand out. It doesn't work with all shots.
